DAY ONE: ZURICH
So. We landed in Switzerland on Friday, and although it was noon (Swiss time) and we hadn't really rested since Wednesday morning (CA time), we still wanted to see Zurich because we were super excited. We navigated our way to the hostel, signed in and locked up our bags, and despite the objections of my exhausted body, headed back out to town! We briefly checked out the lake by our hostel:
PRETTY, RIGHT?
Then we went to Zurich by train. Bus would probably have been easier, but we have train passes! Of course, we got off at the wrong station, and THEN walked in the wrong direction.A+ for us.
We eventually found our way downtown, and toured the 2 cathedrals. The names of the cathedrals are on a map, but that's all the way upstairs, so photos will have to do:
More impressive than the hostels is the view. Here's the view from the cathedral with 2 towers:
....and that, ladies and gentlemen, is why I climbed a flight of stairs that CLEARLY wanted to kill me. Here's what it did to Kim:
I have to go now because I'm about to be kicked out of the hostel common room because its almost midnight - lights out!!
Here are the important things in Zurich:
KIM AND A RANDOM STATUE
KING OF THE CHEESEBURGERS
And, finally,hostel review:
The HI Hostel in Zurich is a great hostel! Expensive, but it was obvious why. 5 people, room, the whole place was clean and all the lights worked! Showers had private changing rooms attached, so no dashing about the hallways in a towel. Breakfast was included, and it was a great spread with large variety and something for everyone. The common area was large and, most of the time, well-populated. The rooms had a bedroom, with a separate room attached with lockers and sinks. This was especially helpful so we could put on our pajamas and rummage through our bags without waking up our roommates, since all 5 beds were filled. Cons: too far from downtown; there was little to see near the hostel, mostly residential area, so we had to take the train to town for any touristy sight-seeing, or even to get to restaurants. Also, the internet cost money. Seriously, guys, whats wrong with free internet?! I'd recommend it though, it was a great place to say for 30 francs/night and an easy place to meet people. Especially if you want to watch the World Cup!
Stay tuned for Day Two: Lucerne and Day Three: Como.
