Plitvice to Vienna

Wednesday we spent literally the entire day getting from Plitvice to Vienna.

We caught an 11am bus from Plitvice to Zagreb, where we waited for a couple of hours for the train to Vienna. While we waited, we bought some superglue from a corner store for Kim to fix her sunglasses. As Kim was trying to break the seal on the glue, it exploded ALL OVER HER, fusing her jeans to her leg, and gluing her finger in an attractive hook shape. This provided some entertainment during the wait for the train.

Between Croatia and Austria, there is Slovenia and Hungary. Visual:

Our Eurail pass book told us we would be going through Slovenia, so of course we were awake to look out the windows and enjoy Slovenia! At one point, a passport officer came in and said something in a language we didn't understand, so we handed him our passport and he stamped it. Afterwards, I asked Kim if he had said something about Hungary. She didn't know, so we read the sign at the next station, and looked it up on the map....and it was in Hungary! It didn't REALLY matter, since we weren't planning to get off the train until Vienna, but it was an interesting change of course...

In addition, the train kept randomly stopping in fields, and they would make announcements we didn't understand in German, and then continue about 10 minutes later. As a result of these little train-rests, we got into Austria half an hour late, and were in Vienna at 10pm instead of 9:30pm.

Once in Vienna, we followed the instructions from the hostel and took the subway to the specified stop. Unfortunately, there were no directions on how to get TO the hostel after that...luckily we ran into some other backpackers headed to the same hostel, so they wandered with us until we found the hostel, showered, and passed out.

Hostel Review:
We stayed at HI Hostel Vienna- Brigittenau. Pretty good! We got a private room, which came with a private bathroom (VERY rare!). It was clean and big and well-equipped (breakfast was good enough that we even stole some more for lunch...). Cons: windows don't open very far so it was hot and stuff in the room, pillows were awful, and too far from city center (half a hour on the metro). It was cheap and clean and friendly tho, we got what we asked for and were able to shower, eat and sleep. That's really all we can expect....
